Social Committee Minutes
July 7, 2010

Present: Ora Avery, Mary Ann Hurley, Carmen Kleiser, Joan Levanti, Jack Malo, Frank McMorrow, Board Liaison, Chris Moncure, Joan Olson, Erna Rodgers, Carol Spracklin, Sue Strang; Melissa Blane and Steve Dreybus. Representing management

Erna called the meeting to order at 4 P.M. The minutes of the June meeting were accepted as e-mailed.

OLD BUSINESS:

  1. June 2: Ladies Night Out: “Who Am I?” was led by Kathy Ruszkowski, Mary Ann Hurley, and Chris Moncure. Each had three people for the audience to guess by asking 20 questions. Answers were given by tables and gals had a good time. Next time, the presenters vow to make the people more difficult to guess!

  2. June 9: Let’s Do Lunch was cancelled due to lack of reservations.

  3. June 11: Beach Party: Many thanks to Jack Malo and Janet Sprague plus other members of Social Committee for great decorations and a fun evening. DJ John Crane was terrific. About 182 attended!!!

  4. June 16: Men’s Night Out was held in the Golf Academy. Golf tips and contests plus hamburgers were featured. About 20 men had a good time.

  5. June 21: Wine Society Tasting was held in Grille Room. Members were given facts about types of wine and used a Golf Scorecard to record which wines were from different areas. Worked well.

  6. Mah Jongg: Valerie has a loyal following of gals who play Mah Jongg every Monday. Great idea!

  7. June 17: Mexican Train was cancelled due to lack of reservations. Will be held July 17 with a Chef’s Buffet instead of taco dinner.

  8. June 30: Under the Chef’s Hat: There was a smaller attendance which is typical just before 4th of July but those who came enjoyed a delicious lunch.

NEW BUSINESS:

  1. July 7: Ladies Night Out tonight will feature Bunco led by Jean Sefchick, Kathy Layburn, and Chris Rogers. There were about 40 gals who had a great time—a raucous bunch! Noticed a number of new gals in attendance. Good idea to have waitresses pass through and offer to take drink orders! Will try to do this as a calendar event—not LNO-- in August.

  2. July 14: Let’s Do Lunch. Carmen will create wording for this to encourage neighborhood groups, book groups, etc to participate.

  3. July 14: Wine Society Dinner will be “California Dreaming and Dinner.”

  4. Thursday, July 22: Mexican Train with Chef’s Buffet. Cocktails begin at 6 PM with dinner and Mexican Train to follow.

  5. Friday, July 30: New Member Reception will be in Harry’s from 4-5 PM. Melissa said they will extend invitations to all members who are new since January 2010. Would love to have as many members of Social Committee attend to meet and greet as possible!

  6. Carmen: Social Events Protocol: There has been mostly positive reaction to the new protocol document. There is a link on the CCMA website for members to access the information. Carmen is also on the Marketing Committee and she reported that there are 17 Social members on a three -month trial basis and 31 new or returning Social or Social with Golf members. We need to encourage these trial-basis people to become members!

  7. August 4: LNO will be Joke Night on the Terrace, weather-permitting. Bring or tell a joke!

  8. Saturday, September 18: Diana Jaeger’s “The Elastic Waist Band” will play for our dinner-dance event. We’ll need a committee to work on this. So far Kathy Ruszkowski, Carmen, Mary Ann and Erna will work on it.

  9. Fireside Chats: Chris Moncure has lined up the President of William and Mary/ He will speak in either November or January. She is also working on speakers the rest of the winter months. Way to go, Chris!!

  10. Carol Spracklin is in contact with Tony Shaver, head basketball coach for William and Mary. They are working on a date for him to speak. It was suggested we also try to get the football coach who also makes a presentation to the Quarterback Club. We’ll try to work this out.

  11. We asked Melissa about another Men’s Night Out. She will talk with TC who organized the first one. There’s always the possibility of Texas Hold ‘em too. Brad, bartender in the Grille Room, has suggested holding another Scotch and Cigar night in September. We’ll have to find a date and get it on the calendar.

  12. Discussed the success of the Golf Academy’s classes for Ford’s Colony residents and suggested there be a “graduation party” for them and an opportunity to encourage them to join the club. Melissa will talk with TC about this.

  13. Steve reported that the Club has received an extension until September 30, 2010, for presenting a Chapter 11 Plan. Things are moving along, but we really would like to see some new full members!

  14. Mary Ann asked that the Scorecard list future dates for social events under a “Save the Date” heading so people can plan a few months out. We’ll try to do this asap.
